2009 was an excellent year for movies. With big-budget blockbusters and small independent films, the year they had something for everyone.
Here are some of my favourite films from 2009. If you have yet to see them, check them out!
Avatar, director James Cameron’s first science fiction epic, is a blockbuster that set the bar for optical power and groundbreaking special effects. It’s also a fascinating look at what happens when we try to take something that isn’t ours.

Neill Blomkamp made an instant impression with his debut, District 9, a unique sci-fi film that was a hit when it was first released. Unlike other movies in this genre, District 9 doesn’t follow a predictable storyline and stays fresh throughout the film.
A gigantic spaceship suddenly appears over Johannesburg in South Africa. The ship’s inhabitants are then evicted to a slum called District 9.

Moon is an intimate sci-fi film that explores the inherent questions of identity. It evokes the likes of Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris.
Director Duncan Jones broke the usual formula for sci-fi movies and crafted an introspective story far more thoughtful than its peers. It is also a film that leaves you feeling deeply impacted by its message.
Guy Ritchie’s hardboiled adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective novel is one of the best films in the genre. While sticking to the original also changes the character to appeal to a broader audience.

Kathryn Bigelow’s award-winning war movie The Hurt Locker tells the story of an Army bomb squad in Iraq. It’s a film known for its intense tension and gruelling battle scenes.
The film also uses many filmmaking techniques to make the movie more realistic. This is especially true of its explosions.
The Hangover was one of the most popular comedy films in 2009, featuring friends on an outrageous night out. It was praised for its unforgettable characters and outrageous antics, but it also had a few heartfelt moments.
It has since inspired many other movies in the genre, and its success has led to more R-rated comedies being produced. Here are some of the best ones to watch if you’re looking for a good laugh.
UP is a Pixar animation extravaganza that will leave you in awe of the care and precision they put into every frame. With a storyline that will make your heart flutter and a soundtrack that will have you laughing and crying in equal measure, this is one of the best-animated films of the past decade.

The Wolf of Wall Street
Leonardo DiCaprio is in top form as the infamous Wall Street stockbroker Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese’s latest masterpiece. It’s a frantic, satirical look at greed and corruption in finance.
It’s based on the memoir of Belfort, who cheated his clients out of millions and was eventually jailed for securities fraud. It’s a scathing condemnation of this culture, but it casts a less flattering light on those who helped him along the way.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Spider-Man has an impressive range of powers to help him keep New York safe. He can shoot webs, boost his speed and strength, and has many other abilities.
When a spider bites him, Peter Parker transforms into a spider-like humanoid with eight arms and six legs. He’s also given an enhanced sense of smell and heightened defence, among other things.
